“Director’s Choice” Exhibit Redirects Vision

by Jen Lynds, UTIMES Advisor

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A woman who gestures to a sight unseen. A man in a chair, centered by his tie, or could it be a noose? A wistful woman, sitting by resplendent flowers. These are just some of the artwork on display at the Reed Gallery as part of the “Director’s Choice: Favorite Selections From The University Collection.” The exhibition includes sculptures, paintings, prints, drawings, and more. Some of the work is from acclaimed sculptor Bernard Langlais. The artist, born in Old Town, ME, crafted the “The Owls” totem pole on campus. In 2014, the Wisconsin-based Kohler Foundation, Inc. donated 800 of his works on paper sketchbooks and thirty sculptures and wall reliefs. Feature artists include Andy Warhol, Gaston Lachaise, Wendy Kindred, and Lucy Hayward Barker.
