WINDHAM, Maine — Windham, a scenic town in southern Maine, has seen a significant
population surge in recent years, growing by nearly 20% over the past decade. With its rural charm and proximity to Portland, the town has become increasingly attractive to new residents seeking affordable housing and a quieter lifestyle, while still being close to urban amenities.
As of 2024, Windham’s population exceeds 20,000, up from around 17,000 in 2010. The town’s appeal, with its lakes, outdoor activities, and strong schools, has drawn many young families, retirees, and remote workers. “It’s a peaceful place, but you’re not far from Portland,” said Sarah Mitchell, who moved to Windham from Portland three years ago. “It’s perfect for raising a family.”
The rapid growth has spurred new housing developments, particularly along Route 302.
However, the influx has also placed pressure on local infrastructure. Town officials are working on expanding roads, schools, and public services to keep pace with the rising population.
“We’re focusing on long-term planning to ensure our services can meet the demand,” said Town Manager Barry Tibbetts. Meanwhile, some longtime residents worry the town’s small-town feel may be lost in the process.
Despite these challenges, Windham’s transformation is largely seen as a positive. Local businesses are thriving, and the town is becoming more diverse. As it continues to grow, the town’s development will be key to maintaining its unique character.
