Becca is still a young college student, so she decided to change her major. What about people who did not switch? David Howlett had always known what he wanted to be when he grew up and what he wanted to go to college for. David said, “I chose my major because I knew what I wanted to do.” He never switched his major in college. But years after graduating, he admitted something. David said, “After I grew up, the career I actually went into could have used a different college major.” He realized that if he had changed his major when he was still in college, he could have actually used his degree for the job he has now.

Ultimately, people are always changing their minds about what they want to do with their lives. At the time, David knew what he wanted to do in the future. But as he grew up, he soon realized that his younger self did not anticipate what career he would be doing in the future. Although David has a different degree, he is now able to use his past experiences in his career. David said, “ I had classes that I took that have prepared me for the career I have now.” David also said, “The degree wasn’t a total wash. I am still able to use the things I learned for my career now.”

Looking back, David says he would do things differently and pick a different major in college. He said, “ If I would have known the path I am on now, I really would have gone more along the lines of social work.” David knew that if he had switched his major in the past, it would have made it easier for him in the future.

So, people should not be scared to switch their major. Ask the hard questions before making the decision: “Do I really want this as a career?” Or “Will this really help me in the future?” People should remember that they are not alone in their thinking. Many people think about switching their major.
