Welcome back to our returning students! We would also like to send out a warm greeting to the new incoming students.  We are so pleased that you selected the University of Maine at Presque Isle!

As of today, if you have not applied for Financial Aid, please do so as soon as possible at www.fafsa.gov.

For UMPI to receive your information, you will need to enter in our school code, which is 002033.

Once you’re awarded, please make sure your award letter is signed so that your financial aid will be applied to your account.

If you received loans and are a first time borrower, make sure the Entrance Counseling and Promissory Note are both complete.  These items can be done at www.studentloans.gov.  This is necessary to complete so that your loans can be applied toward your account to assist with your account balance. If you are a first time Student Loan Borrower, your first disbursement of your student loan won’t take place until 30 days after the first day of classes.  Our office will see this money as anticipated aid and will assist with paying for your bill. If you believe you will receive a refund check to assist with paying for books/supplies, it will not be available at the start of school. We hope you brought a form of payment with you to purchase your necessary course supplies.

If you are receiving any outside scholarship(s) or other assistance for this academic year, please make sure you provide a copy of the letter and/or certificate to our office as soon as possible. It is essential we include these funds at the beginning of the academic year.

If you will have a vehicle on campus, you will need to purchase a parking sticker to avoid obtaining a parking ticket. You’ll need to complete a Motor Vehicle Registration Form in our office. The cost is $10 for the first vehicle parking decal and $2 for each additional vehicle.

If you were awarded Work Study in your Financial Aid award package and have any questions in regards to placement, SEA forms or requirements for the Work Study Program, please contact our office. Keep in mind, if you need your earnings to go toward your bill, make sure to stop by the office to fill out the necessary paperwork at the beginning of each semester.

Here are some other things to keep in mind throughout the year:

* VERY IMPORTANT:  Beginning Oct. 1, 2016, students can apply for Financial Aid for the academic year of 2017-2018. We encourage students to apply early, so full eligibility will be received before some funds run out. More information on this process will be sent at a later date.

*If you are already covered with health insurance and don’t need the insurance offered through the university, make sure to complete the online waiver before Oct. 1, 2016. This will allow for the charge to be removed from your bill. You may provide proof of your insurance information by going to

http://www2.crossagency.com/2016-2017/umpi.php.

* For you to register for each fall and spring semester, you will need to complete the Financial Responsibility Statement under your holds on your Student Services Center on MaineStreet.

* When there is excess funds from Financial Aid, we encourage students to use direct deposit when receiving a refund. If you are not already set up, please stop by our office to obtain the directions on how to send your funds directly to your bank account.

*We also encourage students to take just enough loans to cover their bill, school supplies and books.  If you received a refund check and would like to reduce your loan debt, you may do so by returning the difference to the Office of Student Financial Services. We have noticed many students taking advantage of this and we are hopeful that even more students will do this in the years to come.

*Take advantage of applying for our Foundation Scholarships. At the end of November, keep an eye out for emails and posters throughout campus informing you to stop by our office to apply. These applications will then be due in our office in February.

* If you decide to register for summer courses, please stop by our office during the month of April to apply for summer Financial Aid.  If you do not fill out the summer form, you will not be eligible to receive any aid for the summer.

*Sign up for SALT! You may create an account for SALT at www.saltmoney.org. This website provides you scholarship opportunities, internship and job searches, tools to understand financial matters and so much more. As a bonus, it is free! We suggest students take advantage of this website brought to you by American Student Assistance and the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
