Support, Care, Contribute, Encourage, Educate….  Those will be some of the words heard on Saturday, March 10, at UMPI.  That will be the 12th annual Planet Head Day.

Dr. Kevin McCartney, one of its founders,  said, “The purpose of Planet Head Day was to provide science education associated with the New Horizons, a mission to Pluto program.  But later was expanded into a fundraiser for the Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C-A-N-C-E-R).”

This year the event will be international with a simulcast event happening in Poland. The two events will begin with the introductions from both McCartney and Dr. Tomasz Herzog.  McCartney will be traveling to Poland for the event ceremony.  He will give an introduction for the event in English, while Herzog will be giving an introduction here at UMPI in Polish. The purpose for this year’s event is to recognize the international nature that Planet Head Day serves. Both locations will run at the same time, starting at 10 a.m. here at UMPI and 4 p.m. in Poland.

Along with McCartney, this event it was founded by Jeannie McGowan who lost her life to cancer a year and half ago, in 2007.  McCartney said, “This is an extension of my interests both in science, education and community service. I think we have likely raised over $100,000 for C-A-N-C-E-R over the years.”

The event will be taking place on Saturday, March 10, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Wieden Hall Gymnasium here at UMPI.  It will be hosted by C-A-N-C-E-R, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Northern Maine Museum of Science and NASA New Horizons.
