UMPI alumni gathered in the Campus Center on October 1 to attend the Inaugural UMPI Alumni Hour.
Thomas Wire, UMPI Alumni Board President, spoke on the commitment UMPI has to its students.
“We want to make current students feel like alumni as soon as they enroll,” Wire said.
Following Wire, Interim President and Provost Ray Rice spoke about the progress UMPI has made this year.
“Throughout the United States, campuses are changing and UMPI is no exception,” Rice said. “We’ve adapted to this change while keeping our values consistent and providing outstanding opportunities to our students.”
Rice continued by detailing UMPI’s “learner-focused” educational model.
“Our curriculum is designed to give students the experiences and opportunities they need to succeed after graduation,” he said.
The Alumni Hour ended with the presenting of the Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Educator Alumni Awards. The Distinguished Alumni Educator award was given to Anita Campbell. She graduated from UMPI with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1969. She was recognized for her professional work in education.
Jeanette Morrow received the Distinguished Alumni Award for her outstanding leadership and involvement with the alumni committee. She graduated from UMPI in 1974 with a degree in Health and Physical Education, and has battled pulmonary hypertension for much of her adult life. In an inspirational award speech Morrow said UMPI gave her the tools in life to never give up.
The Alumni Hour ended with all those in attendance excited to see what strides UMPI will take next year.
