The pressure to have a clear plan can be overwhelming, but it&#8217;s okay to take your time and explore your options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-db180c8b5d54693efbcd423d73b8436d\">More and more students are embracing non-traditional paths, such as taking gap years or starting college later. This shift in perspective is opening up a world of unique life journeys and diverse forms of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-d8cb363cd62d50783d1c049697a8c2f1\">Kristin Lorbeski has a master&#8217;s degree in education and is a national board certified teacher with twenty-three years of teaching experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-05d8438bb1d17a638f47e1718d603c6c\">Lorbeski spoke about her upbringing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-e9431fa020eec50636f2e1c3869096e9\">&#8220;My mom graduated high school, and my dad got a two-year degree,&#8221; she said. &#8220;My parents always wanted me and my siblings to do well in school, but they never pushed us to go to college.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-4543664b8d38e308feba1a7560258b0d\">Lorbeski said that she &#8220;always wanted&#8221; to go to college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-d2f76ba5b4b8b01c2c9e930aa49d40c1\">&#8220;I loved school, and the careers I was interested in required going to college,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Also, all of my friends were also going to college.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-1cd1451ac79cd05db81044d834b19281\">She noted that she first attended college and received her bachelor&#8217;s degree in communications. Still, when her journey ended, she knew that it wasn&#8217;t the career field she desired. She worked with Central Maine Power, assisting with technical writing and training. After getting married and having four children, she decided it was time to return to school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-108235df828562647bc04faa6e764360\">&#8220;I saw my opportunity, and I took it. The University of Southern Maine (USM) had the Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP), and teaching was always one of the careers I was interested in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-4136c9e24a499443ebe7c022cb4ab50b\">According to the USM website, the Extended Teacher Education Program prepares graduates for initial teacher certification in either Elementary (K-6 ) or Secondary (6-12 ) education and leads to a master of science in education<a href=\"https:\/\/usm.maine.edu\/teacher-education\/graduate-extended-teacher-education-program-etep\/\">.<\/a> The college offers a 10-month or two-year program to teacher certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-2f5ddd64d862c2120b4de2c06ed1aa46\">Since completing her master&#8217;s degree in 2001, Lorbeski has taught in the classroom for the last 23 years. In 2019, her district offered to pay for any teacher interested in enrolling in the National Board Certification Program. This extremely rigorous program has become one of the most significant accomplishments for teachers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-7adf7fd80e705e6a050e44eb827e1ad9\">Lorbeski pursued certification.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-e0ede0ec2c4f98d80cb22007c29ace81\">\u201cI have always loved learning,\u201d she said, \u201cand since my district was going to pay for it, I thought, \u2018Why not?\u2019 There\u2019s also a stipend for teachers who get their certification, and the district advertises it to show the prestige of their teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-0f62549bf9a23178f08a3eb35ed97c5b\">Looking back, Lorbeski said she \u201cwouldn\u2019t change anything\u201d about her educational journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-b33ea34ef380ad3f708dd5ec9e8ae55d\">\u201cAfter I took a break and went back, I feel like I appreciated it more,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I worked harder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d6fb2f6d159c5fd827a618d4eaf34be9\"><strong>Kristin Lorbeski (photo by Jennifer Lorbeski)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2024\/11\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"374\" height=\"458\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2024\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/image.png 374w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/image-245x300.png 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Jennifer Lorbeski YourPace Student Contributor The road to higher learning and the workforce look different from one individual to another.
