{"id":9215,"date":"2024-11-07T13:10:25","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T18:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/?p=9215"},"modified":"2024-11-07T13:10:27","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T18:10:27","slug":"with-a-focus-on-safety-seeley-takes-the-helm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/2024\/11\/07\/with-a-focus-on-safety-seeley-takes-the-helm\/","title":{"rendered":"With a focus on safety Seeley takes the helm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-b9a6f11a80b31e82bce2041d3212cc2c\"><strong>by Damien Pearson and Christie Oneill<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-8991e4537ec3beb030217b367d16b8e5\">Joey Seeley, the director of campus safety and security and police chief of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, came to the college hungry to serve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-881f042109076cda57036ac2f9802433\">As students scurried past his office in the Campus Center in the late fall, the gregarious and energetic staffer chatted frankly about security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-e27f493bf2e2baf32408f51c0aac71b8\">\u201cOur role here is to educate and ensure the safety of everyone,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-f1f660db69d5d9c36c80eaa91308e92d\">With a focus on resources and education, Seeley is already impacting the campus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-1c9fd1674dc82302f04a42513fbc5cfe\">Seeley, a UMPI alumni, is deeply committed to safety and his community. He maintains thirty years of expertise in law enforcement and security positions, including his tenure at Roosevelt International Park and his duties as a state park ranger and manager.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-6cd772689a463198fa3ba2d48dc2f0ab\">\u201cI worked at Roosevelt International Park for various summers, then became a state park ranger and manager,\u201d he said. \u201cWhile going to school, I went into a work-study job here at UMPI, started in security, then as a Resident Assistant (RA),\u201d Seeley explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-8e81a1a4f746581de53cf691342c2557\">He stated he enjoyed his time at UMPI and would choose the same path today, further illustrating his devotion to his community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-9644a25700059473a6dfc1522f43902d\">As he transitions into his new role, Seeley is relying on his background and education to develop a safety and security plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-203e6d6ffe7c58c9db4170cfd362dc9d\">If there is an active incident involving emergency personnel, Seeley will send out communication tests to ensure a rapid reaction. Seeley is currently negotiating with other companies to expedite active crisis communications, although access to widespread crisis messaging is limited to approximately four persons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-96d3e679c348b69726b234129ecad60e\">Seeley vehemently assured staff and students that action was his first response to any incident.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-cca2d88ea2ca0ca72461f20cdda1da41\">\u201cIf I hear of an active situation, I will not sit here and communicate; I will spring into action,\u201d he stressed.&nbsp; \u201cMy experience, with almost 34 years of working in the county, means I have connections everywhere, ensuring that someone will always be available to respond.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-24a85063636d790879b73c2e033b19c0\">Seeley has ensured that communication tactics are readily available so that he can be at the scene while also alerting the necessary parties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-de15da3a2caa9a3271df20d6e16931bc\">Throughout his career, Seeley has gained countless resources within the local community. If a large-scale situation were to occur, those resources would be called upon to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-192e4162cb4f03bb200a7cd686fb8c36\">&nbsp;\u201cMany people live within two minutes from here, so it is never whoever is on patrol at the time,\u201d Seeley explained. \u201cIt is also about who gets the message and is readily available.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-004b747edca12dfc347332391263283c\">Seeley also ensures proper training among security and residential staff. Through discussions and training sessions, \u201cthey can read it (policies) word for word so nothing is missed,\u201d he explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-c28be3c3802f332e220bec7a65af0ff2\">Seeley plans to provide more training opportunities for students and staff, including an exercise to plan what to do in an active shooter emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-0c3cae1ef7e29061eec2d27884a6ebfa\">Seeley also advocates for mental health and believes \u201cthere is no shame in reaching out.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-65115634a82f13018c271115b3ce9642\">With campus resources for students struggling with mental health or substance abuse, he urged any students to speak up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-3764d5f30cef072ddf528d7e73203929\">&nbsp;\u201cIf someone reaches out to me or to counselors (in person or anonymously), we would give them the resources they need \u2026 we would give them the proper contacts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-1455725e95c55fe458e716424ccd408d\">Seeley stressed that he is approachable and open to talking to everyone.
