The University Times staff is interviewing students across campus as part of our \u201ccampus voices\u201d project. As the fall semester rolls on, so do UMPI sports teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ricky Garcia, a third-year transfer student from Jacksonville, Florida, was recruited for the University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team three years ago. He is pursuing a double major in criminology and psychology, and he sat down to discuss the upcoming season and his unique experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think we have a lot of potential after seeing the team this semester,” he said. “The coach recruited many good first-year players; since they are good, the returners will also work harder.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garcia reflected on his proudest moment on the team thus far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am the oldest on the team and still manage to keep up, and I have had multiple opportunities to start,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garcia admitted that being the oldest comes with difficulties. He acknowledged that balancing academics, athletics, and work is challenging. Garcia explained how he manages his responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“School is always first,” he said. “I build my schedule around classes. It helps that the coach is very understanding. A good example is that I have a night class this semester, and practice pushes into that class. Coach lets me show up late to practice as long as I go to class and do well.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garcia offered this advice to newcomers, “I’m a firm believer in trying to slow down the game. You don’t want to rush. Also, be yourself! You will make friends by just being you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
