Those who missed it missed learning about the stance on modern education. Belen Dougherty, Kacie Chapman, Jacob Swain and Eleanor Goheen taught us to ask important questions such as, \u201cWhat are institutions bringing to the communities?\u201d and \u201cSkills that are valued are changing. How can higher education change with it?\u201d\u00a0 These questions are designed to reflect on the state of higher education. To renew education can mean a couple of different things \u201cI was researching to renew education in America. I was asked if I was thinking renewal to be going back to its roots or renewing as making anew.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7194\" style=\"width: 1035px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/2022\/05\/02\/to-renew-university-day-edition\/presenting_-to-renew-or-not-renew\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7194\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7194\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7194\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/05\/Presenting_-To-Renew-or-Not-Renew.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1025\" height=\"769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/05\/Presenting_-To-Renew-or-Not-Renew.jpg 1025w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/05\/Presenting_-To-Renew-or-Not-Renew-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2022\/05\/Presenting_-To-Renew-or-Not-Renew-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1025px) 100vw, 1025px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Presenting: To Renew or Not Renew<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Throughout history, the education system has proven to be important and highly valued. \u201cNot only for economic gain but also for the social and the constructive democracy in this country.\u201d This value in education does not hold the same weight that it did in history to the present day. \u201cI had a lot of people telling me, \u2018You don\u2019t need to go to college to get the job. You can just get the job. You don\u2019t need to gain access to the skills because we already have the opportunity to make money without that,\u2019\u201d Belen said, \u201cWhy are we choosing higher education? Is it for the good life to live because you&#8217;re gaining knowledge and gaining social capital? Or is it for that piece of paper and to get a job?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0As a group, the presenters were unanimous in the belief that education is more than just a degree. \u201cWe are not here for the degree. We are here for what we get out of it for the rest of our lives&#8230;. To think, question and challenge,\u201d Jacob said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The presentation concluded with the idea that value needs to be brought back to education.
