\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0On Tuesday, March 4, 2022, Apple issued a new product\u2019s release. The release is the newest product in the Summer 2022 lineup. The release featured an advertisement for this new product: the Smartphone Oil Diffuser.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cOne day, I was on the subway in New York City. I was going to work as usual. The subway was always dark, dreary and damp. It smelled like sweat and hot breath,\u201d Greg Longhorn, a product designer for Apple, said. Longhorn, 28, of Kentucky, has relocated to New York City. He has been working with Apple for about three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI thought to myself, what is a new and innovative product for this year\u2019s release? We have iPhones. We have iPads. We have it all. What we don\u2019t have is a product that affects our nostrils.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Longhorn spent countless hours scouring user manuals for oil diffusers. He wanted to know how they work. He also needed inspiration for a design. Apple is well-known for its simplistic designs and bright colors. Longhorn did not want to surprise Apple fans too much. He did want to let his creativity shine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cFirst, I wanted to see how oil diffusers work. I\u2019m not an engineer. I just draw for a living. I was having trouble drawing the diffuser because the shape is awkward. It\u2019s really small, too. I teamed up with an Apple engineer, Jake Johnson,\u201d Longhorn said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jake Johnson, 26, of New York City, has been working at Apple for about a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWhen Greg first came to me with the idea, I laughed in his face. I thought, who would use that product? Then I got to thinking. Yeah, he\u2019s right. It does smell really bad on the subway,\u201d Johnson said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Longhorn and Johnson decided to team up. They brought sketches and prototypes to a meeting with their bosses. The first prototype was a 3D printed model. The model was based on a mini oil diffuser sold on Amazon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cSo, really, all it needs is a way to connect to the phone. That\u2019s the tricky part. The first prototype was made of a headphone jack and a mini oil diffuser. Our iPhones have enough power for it,\u201d Johnson said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cSince I am the creative one, I named it. The iDiffuser. It sounds cool. Futuristic,\u201d Longhorn said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The same few products get re-released each year. Apple fans expect the same each time. So, there have been a lot of mixed feelings from the Apple lover community. Longhorn wrote a piece for the Apple news website on the iDiffuser. Some of the comments are hateful, while others are praising his creativity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI am totally outside of the box now. Apple fans always expect a better version of the well-known products. Each release has been the same. These next few years, I am going to show the world what Apple can produce,\u201d Longhorn said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Johnson said, \u201cMany people dislike change.\u201d This is why there are plenty of hate comments on Longhorn\u2019s designs. Longhorn remembers when he first started working at Apple. When the iPad mini came out, fans were upset by its dimensions. Fans said it was \u201cawkward\u201d and that it \u201cdidn\u2019t fit in the hand nicely.\u201d Now, the iPad mini has outsold the regular iPads.
