{"id":6092,"date":"2019-10-28T09:51:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T13:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/?p=6092"},"modified":"2025-08-22T19:26:47","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T23:26:47","slug":"an-instant-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/2019\/10\/28\/an-instant-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"An Instant Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s Homecoming was a success thanks to community members, alumni and students too. \u00a0The car show was no exception.\u00a0 Participants brought classic rides from as far south as Patten, with vehicles dating back to the 1930s.\u00a0 From original owners to grandpa\u2019s ride, all owners took great pride in their rides.<\/p>\n<p>Cordell Smith brought his 1967 Chevrolet Impala SS, popularized by the television series, \u201cSupernatural.\u201d<em>\u00a0 <\/em>This Impala never made the big screen, but its story is just as interesting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandfather had a bunch of old cars.\u00a0 Before he died a couple years ago, he made sure to give this one to me,\u201d Cordell said. \u201cAt least, when I turn 25 technically.\u00a0 For now, it\u2019s at my grandma\u2019s house and I can work on it when I visit.\u201d\u00a0 Cordell is only 15 years old but did admit, \u201cShe lets me drive it in the yard if I mow her lawn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joe Grant and his wife drove their 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II all the way from Patten to be in the car show.\u00a0 Joe feels that the beauty of old cars won\u2019t be matched ever again.\u00a0 That\u2019s why he brought his Plymouth to car shows all summer long.\u00a0 Even the rain couldn\u2019t stop the Grants. \u00a0Joe joked about the free cleaning.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s been babied since I\u2019ve owned it. \u00a0The wife and I very seldom take it out in the rain.\u00a0 But hey, you gotta wash \u2018em sometime, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mike Marshall drove his 1954 GMC work truck to the Homecoming celebration.\u00a0 This was his truck\u2019s first ever appearance at a car show.\u00a0 The rare, five-window truck has survived a lifetime of work and Mike still uses it regularly.\u00a0 \u201cI probably use it like a truck more than a toy,\u201d he said about the old GMC. \u201cBut that\u2019s nothing compared to what they used it for originally. \u00a0I got it from a paper mill in Portland.\u00a0 Guys would stand on the hood in a warehouse and as they went down the rows, they\u2019d work off it.\u00a0 I had to put a whole new hood on it because the old one was all shoved in,\u201d Mike said.<\/p>\n<p>Every car has a story, the same as people.\u00a0 The survivors, like the old work truck or grandfather\u2019s hotrod, are the stories worth sharing.\u00a0 This is why it\u2019s so important for these car shows to continue: to trade stories and history.\u00a0 Each dent, scratch or rust bubble tells its own tale.\u00a0 Homecoming is much like an alumni car show.\u00a0 The \u201ccollectors\u201d group and share history, stories and tricks of the trade.\u00a0 Only, they leak a lot less.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s Homecoming was a success thanks to community members, alumni and students too. \u00a0The car show was no exception.\u00a0 Participants brought classic rides from as far south as Patten, with vehicles dating back to the 1930s.\u00a0 From original owners to grandpa\u2019s ride, all owners took great pride in their rides.
