{"id":5930,"date":"2019-05-18T09:51:16","date_gmt":"2019-05-18T13:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/?p=5930"},"modified":"2025-08-23T16:31:34","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T20:31:34","slug":"her-last-year-at-umpi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/2019\/05\/18\/her-last-year-at-umpi\/","title":{"rendered":"Her Last Year at UMPI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Picking out your home for the next four years can be hard.\u00a0 For Brandy Smith, a senior PCJ major at UMPI, she didn\u2019t find it hard at all. \u201cSo, I was the editor of my high school newspaper. I went to Mt. View High School and I wanted to major in journalism and I was looking and looking at NESCOM, and it was very expensive and complicated because it was part of Husson.\u00a0 I decided to look elsewhere, and I checked out UMPI.\u00a0 My friends and I came up and toured UMPI and I met Dr. J and thought it was a perfect fit,\u201d Brandy said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Brandy started school here in 2015 and just after completing her freshmen year, she was asked to do something.\u00a0 \u201cI knew the editor of the paper, the University Times.\u00a0 He was a pretty intimidating guy and he had to step down and Dr. J asked me to be the editor.\u00a0 I had one day of training and my experience helped.\u00a0 It was a struggle, but being thrown into deadlines and leadership gave me a sense of responsibility in the early stages of my college career,\u201d Brandy said.<\/p>\n<p>When Brandy took this on, it wasn\u2019t an easy task for her, but she pulled through.\u00a0 \u201cBrandy stepped up in a very big way, because the paper is about a lot more than putting things in a template. \u00a0It\u2019s a lot of leadership.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a joy for me to see how she has grown in confidence, leadership and become a very strong presenter. \u00a0And initially that was very hard for her and now she knows she does it well and she likes doing it,\u201d Dr. J said.<\/p>\n<p>When Brandy isn\u2019t working on homework or editing the paper, she is doing other things she loves to do. \u201cMy senior has been busy, but I really like to write poetry. \u00a0I try to write a couple of poems for Upcountry every year.\u00a0 I like to bake. \u00a0I am not much of a chef, but I can bake pretty well! I like to go camping. \u00a0That\u2019s not an option a lot in Maine: there\u2019s like two peak months in the summer.\u00a0 I also like to watch Netflix, my favorite things to watch being comedy and horror. \u00a0And I also have a rock collection!\u00a0 I am one of those people who see\u2019s a pretty rock and think \u2018I\u2019ve got to have that!\u2019 and I grab it,\u201d Brandy said.<\/p>\n<p>Within in the early weeks of May, Brandy will be walking onto the stage to receive her diploma she has worked so hard for.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll be walking and see something and think, \u2018Oh, I am going to miss that and didn\u2019t appreciate it.\u2019\u00a0 Like the arching sun and the squirrel that lives near the library.\u00a0 Also, all the great people I have gotten to interact with in this area because I am moving. \u00a0So I will try to maintain those relationships, but I won\u2019t be seeing them every day,\u201d Brandy said.<\/p>\n<p>Brandy is also going to be missed.\u00a0 \u201cBrandy was my work study and we always got along, but our relationship has gotten stronger because we\u2019ve been working at it for so long now. She says being my work study is never boring because something will come up and we do it. She\u2019s very versatile and adaptable.\u00a0 I am happy to see her go and spread her wings, but I am also sad because I am going to really miss her,\u201d Dr. J said.<\/p>\n<p>Brandy has spent the last four years working hard at becoming the writer she is.\u00a0 She has spent countless hours working on homework and editing the paper.\u00a0 When she isn\u2019t doing that, she is working on her poetry and wants to showcase her poetry in a magazine.\u00a0 Brandy came from a small town to a college several hours away and hasn\u2019t stopped.
