The size is proportionate to the real sculpture.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>University of Maine at Presque Isle art students are licking their lips in preparation for their newest project: a 50-foot lollipop sculpture.\u00a0 The sculpture will replace the wind turbine that caught fire last year.<\/p>\n<p>The project is projected to take 8-12 months of work to complete. \u00a0The size of the candy will be approximately 30 feet in diameter.\u00a0 The frame of the sucker will be built using a steel frame, canvased with large\u2014but thin&#8211;sheets of aluminum.\u00a0 These wrap around the structure as if they were papier m\u00e2ch\u00e9. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Welding students at the Vocational Center in Caribou will be assembling the frame as a whole.\u00a0 Once construction is complete, helicopters will carry the large metal structure to the UMPI campus.\u00a0 The helicopters will carefully lower the candy cage onto the windmill\u2019s tower. \u00a0\u00a0Then trained welding experts will make it permanent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever we work at high elevations, there are trained professionals involved.\u00a0 Presque Isle Fire is always happy to help.\u00a0 In addition, they keep paramedics on call,\u201d Benjamin Shaw said.\u00a0 Shaw is UMPI\u2019s chief business officer administration and finance.\u00a0 He will be securing finances for the project on top of overseeing construction.<\/p>\n<p>UMPI art students will decide on the lollipop\u2019s \u201cflavor,\u201d as well as any aesthetic touches they wish to include. \u00a0Items up for discussion are: hair stuck to the candy, a crack through the middle showing a bubblegum center and the color palette that will be used. \u00a0Peppermint is the leading contender due to winter\u2019s consuming a large part of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Local corn dog fan Harry Gates said, \u201cI have no idea why they\u2019d make it a lollipop.\u00a0 There are so many better foods that are on sticks.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got popsicles, kabobs, cotton candy and my favorite, corn dogs.\u00a0 If it were up to me, it would be a great big corn dog going up there. \u00a0No sucker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about Gates\u2019 concerns, Shaw said, \u201cA lollipop is something that appeals to all ages.\u00a0 Other foods like corn dogs, kabobs and popsicles just don\u2019t appeal to as many people.\u00a0 Everyone likes candy: it makes you feel like a kid again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students at UMPI have no need to fear sugar-rush or feeble dental hygiene.\u00a0 Fifty gallons of sugar-free primer will coat the sculpture.\u00a0 And should you need a reminder to brush your teeth?<\/p>\n<p>Just look to the southwest.\u00a0 The big lollipop in the sky ought to jog your memory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Maine at Presque Isle art students are licking their lips in preparation for their newest project: a 50-foot lollipop sculpture.\u00a0 The sculpture will replace the wind turbine that caught fire last year.
