Sherer’s collection fills more than 10 large display cases. The cases are filled with collectables ranging from antique silver dollars to Mookie Betts rookie cards.<\/p><\/div>\n

Icy winds on an early February Sunday could not stop collectors as they met for the monthly Coin and Card Show.\u00a0 James Scherer hosts the event at the Hampton Inn. \u00a0It takes 10 large display cases to show off his collection, ranging from sports cards to silver bars.\u00a0 And it wouild likely take libraries to contain his knowledge of collectibles. \u00a0Scherer\u2019s amassed his knowledge during a lifetime of trading of cards and collectibles.\u00a0 He\u2019s done this as a hobby. \u00a0He\u2019s also done it for a living. \u00a0You may have seen him at the Aroostook Centre Mall.<\/p>\n

Browsing his collections, he discussed the history of the pieces.\u00a0 He pointed out two silver nickels, one minted in Philadelphia more valuable that its twin made in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

Later he moved to his own past.\u00a0 First there was a collection that now numbers hundreds of Whitman books. \u00a0These books triggered Scherer\u2019s love for collecting at age 11.\u00a0 Then there are silver bars, stamped with the year they were produced, that he received as Christmas gifts from family members.<\/p>\n

Another case shows rookie cards featuring Tom Brady. \u00a0\u201cI figured they\u2019d be popular around Super Bowl time.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is an appraised series of baseball cards with a couple of Beantown favorites, Yastrzemski and Evans. \u00a0To the eye they appear brand new, but are ranked respectively at a three and a five on a scale to 10, 10 being highest.\u00a0 This is known as the PSA ranking.\u00a0 PSA stands for Professional Sports Authenticator. \u00a0It is a third-party organization that created a standard for ranking quality of sports memorabilia.<\/p>\n

The Hampton Inn houses events monthly, but it is Scherer who arranges the events.\u00a0 You\u2019re more than welcome to browse and even learn from these local collectors.<\/p>\n

\u201cAroostook County is unlike anywhere else I\u2019ve lived,\u201d Scherer said. \u00a0\u201cAnd I\u2019ve moved 19 times.\u00a0 Collections stay together here.\u00a0 People value what they have and they keep it.\u00a0 In most urbanized cities, items are sold and collections are split up to sell at antique dealers.\u00a0 But not here.\u201d<\/p>\n

You can be sure to find Scherer and his collection at the Coin and Card Show.\u00a0 He\u2019s an interesting storyteller and a fantastic resource for amateur collectors.\u00a0 There is no cover charge to attend, no dress code, but there is plenty to see–and to learn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
