The pioneers behind UMPI’s new honors program.Adam Weyenth, Sarah Harris, Darius Haskell, and Evan Zarkadas.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Many universities in the United States have an honors program.\u00a0 <\/span>The University of Maine at Presque Isle has had challenges maintaining one.\u00a0 <\/span>But four students– Evan Zarkadas, Darius Haskell, Sarah Harris and Adam Weyenth–are working to change that.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe used to have honors classes like regular classes,\u201d Haskell said.\u00a0 <\/span>Students in the classes would work on skills such as team leading and research.\u00a0 <\/span>Together the current students have made a plan on what a new honors program would look like.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThe target is to find interesting students,\u201d Zarkadas said.\u00a0 <\/span>Honors will have a live program.\u00a0 <\/span>The program is still in its early stages.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Freshmen-and-sophomore-level classes would work in groups.\u00a0 <\/span>Students who wish to join must have a grade point average of 3.0.\u00a0 <\/span>They must also have taken an FYS-100 course.\u00a0 <\/span>New members will be welcomed with an induction ceremony.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Sophomores in the program must complete an Hon-200 course.\u00a0 <\/span>They are also able to go on the honors retreat during the spring semester.\u00a0 <\/span>Retreats are used to help students figure out their research projects.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Juniors have must take a Hon-300 course.\u00a0 <\/span>Students must participate in University Day with at least one presentation.\u00a0 <\/span>Presentations take place once a year.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Seniors are required to take Hon-421.\u00a0 <\/span>Students will lead this course.\u00a0 <\/span>Students will choose and create the projects. Seniors must go to two honors events a year.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The students hope that this student-based program will bring more school pride to UMPI.\u00a0 <\/span>Benefits of the program are that students will gain more confidence in their day-to-day lives.\u00a0 <\/span>Graduates will also have an honors designation on their transcripts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
