Pierre, S.D., there are only volunteer fire departments: men and women who sacrifice their free time away from family and friends to train and better themselves to be the best that they can be.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They often have all the certifications of a paid force.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They can be farmers, ranchers, the guy at the grocery store bagging food, your next door neighbor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>D.J. Jennings, a 22-year-old firefighter for the Pierre Fire Department as well as with the Department of Defense Fire Department, said that he might as well be a paid firefighter. He has gone through all the classes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The only difference between him and a paid firefighter from a bigger city is a paycheck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>So why do it then? Dalton Sack, with the Ft. Pierre Fire Department, said, \u201cIt\u2019s about community and taking care of people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I watched my dad, my uncles and my grandfather all fight fire to help their community.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s something that I want to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The rewards that these firefighters receive are much more than monetary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Both men spoke of the joy of knowing that they were helping people in what might be one of their most tragic events.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cBesides,\u201d Jennings said, \u201cDriving a fire truck with lights and sirens on is never not fun.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sack also said, \u201cThe camaraderie that you build between the other people on the fire department is something that you never forget.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are more than friends or co-workers: they are family.\u201d Having a tight-knit group of people with similar experiences can be one of the most rewarding things of all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Fire trucks driving down the road, lights blaring, is something that will always turn drivers\u2019 heads, cause them to slow, watch the scene.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Both Sack and Jennings made sure to bring to attention the need to pull over when you see those lights and hear those sirens.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jennings said, \u201cWhen people do not pull over, it delays our response.
