\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Most parents will tell you that they just want to have their children to have happy lives.\u00a0 <\/span>Parents who have children with special needs are no different.\u00a0 <\/span>They may not, however, understand the challenges that these children face.\u00a0 <\/span>Staff at the Northern Lighthouse know this.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The staff members help northern Maine families understand their children\u2019s behavior.\u00a0 <\/span>Parents learn to reward positive behavior and how to manage the bad behavior.\u00a0 <\/span>TNLH works with 440 families in Aroostook County.\u00a0 <\/span>Its offices are in Caribou, Mars Hill, Presque Isle and Waterville.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Tiffany Faulkner, CEO of TNLH, said, \u201cWe have many success stories, and we have a lot of people who have done very well.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Most children who stay in the Mars Hill residential house have trouble at home.\u00a0 <\/span>At the home, children learn how to be a part of a family.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Clients of TNLH often struggle in school as well as at home.\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes they are bullied and lash out in dangerous ways.\u00a0 <\/span>They feel that they are not being heard and find it hard to tell others how they feel.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Corey Tilley does most of TNLH\u2019s outreach.\u00a0 <\/span>He currently runs 10 groups for children to help manage their behaviors.\u00a0 <\/span>One young lady who would come to group had a hard time opening up.\u00a0 <\/span>She would sit in the back, pull her hoodie over her head, tighten the strings and would not speak.\u00a0 <\/span>She was there for a month before talking.\u00a0 <\/span>Now the young lady receives awards in school for being helpful and has more confidence.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe are seeing detentions going down,\u201d Tilley said.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cTeachers are finding the positives in things.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Children who get kicked out of class are now returning to classes.\u00a0 <\/span>Group gives children a chance to share.\u00a0 <\/span>Some who graduate still want to go to group.\u00a0 <\/span>They look forward to it.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Northern Lighthouse helps build stronger families.\u00a0 <\/span>It provides the skills and teaches families who may not know how to raise children who have behavior and mental challenges.\u00a0 <\/span>Children learn how to grow and how to make their relationships grow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
