{"id":5264,"date":"2018-03-30T09:50:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-30T13:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/?p=5264"},"modified":"2025-08-24T10:28:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T14:28:17","slug":"haunted-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/2018\/03\/30\/haunted-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Haunted Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5266\" style=\"width: 734px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2018\/03\/St.-Johns-School-bw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5266\" class=\" wp-image-5266\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2018\/03\/St.-Johns-School-bw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/St.-Johns-School-bw.jpg 3300w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/St.-Johns-School-bw-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/St.-Johns-School-bw-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/St.-Johns-School-bw-1024x791.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/St.-Johns-School-bw-1200x927.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St John&#8217;s School.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s most likely only a few of our current UMPI students know about our haunted campus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Where the University of Presque Isle now stands was once known as St. John\u2019s Episcopal Secondary School for Boys.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was established in 1884 and consisted of three buildings: the chapel, gymnasium and drill hall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was created for preparation for college or scientific school or to study any profession or business life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When it opened its doors, it had about 80 students and closed in 1896.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>In 1902 the town of Presque Isle purchased the St. John\u2019s Episcopal Secondary School along with five acres of land.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The building and land was then offered to the state if it was to build a normal school.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With the campaigning efforts of Reverend George M. Park, the Maine State Legislature passed a bill to establish a normal school in Presque Isle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Aroostook State Normal School opened on Sept. 15, 1903, and offered a two-year program for teaching.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Seventeen students and three faculty members began the first semester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In 1921 and 1922 ASNS use to hold a Winter Carnival where student competed against one another in several events.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was usually seniors against juniors, and it was during one of the events, the snowshoe dash, that a senior injured her leg.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thinking it was just a bad sprain, she wrapped her leg and took it easy the remainder of the weekend in her dormitory, which is now known as Normal Hall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>According to historical records, her name was Joanna Parks and she was known to her friends as Jo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Jo didn\u2019t show for her classes on Monday and her friends figured she just wanted to take an extra day to tend to her injured leg.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Monday night came.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not seeing her come out of her room to attend dinner, one of her friends went to her room.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She found Jo unconscious and not responding.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She was taken to the local hospital where she died several hours later.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It appeared that she had a small fracture and an infection set in which was the cause of her demise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Not long after her death, the students use to complain about being uneasy in that building.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They had a feeling of being watched or feeling a sudden chill running down their spines.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One student who used to leave her bedroom door open for a faint light from the hall claimed to have seen an outline of a silhouette just standing and staring at the foot of her bed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Through the years, other stories have surfaced but have subsided slightly since the use of the building has changed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Normal Hall is the oldest building on campus today and has been through a few renovations since it was built in 1905.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>A current student who only wants to be addressed as Sarah has experienced some suspicious activity prior to the last renovation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI was working late one night on a presentation for a class.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Another student was supposed to meet me and we were going to complete the assignment together.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I remember it was snowing outside and figured this was the reason for her delay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All of a sudden, the lights flickered.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thinking it was due to the storm, I didn\u2019t give it much thought, plus my computer battery was full.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If the light did go out my computer would stay on.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Next thing I remember is everything went black.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My computer lost power and I was left sitting in the dark.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I went to reach for my phone in my purse and when I did, I felt a hand on my arm.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The lights immediately came back on and I quickly hurried out of there!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve never gone back in that building alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Another student who wants to remain anonymous shared the story of a late-night stroll on campus alone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI was coming from town one night, picking up a few items from the grocery store, and I decided to take a shortcut by Normal Hall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The outside was brightly lit and I was passing by the side of the building and just happened to look up at one of the windows and saw someone staring at me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I remember she looked as if in a trance and her faced glowed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I started running and never looked back, and I was still shaking when I got to my dorm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>So, during a late-night stroll, if you\u2019re curious and courageous, stop by Normal Hall and see if Jo\u2019s anywhere to be seen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or if you\u2019re brave enough take a walk inside and sit alone in the dark, see if she\u2019ll pay you a brief and sweet visit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Better yet, ask Dr. J. about her and Saint\u2019s own encounters in Normal
