\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Long winters are hard on roads.\u00a0 <\/span>Recently many potholes have been appearing across the streets of Mars Hill, Presque Isle and Bridgewater.\u00a0 <\/span>Fixing the roads during winter can be very challenging.\u00a0 <\/span>The cold weather can be dangerous to repair crews.\u00a0 <\/span>Snowbanks can make it difficult for crews to set up the equipment needed to repair the holes.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The City of Presque Isle has found a solution in an unlikely source.\u00a0 <\/span>Lawmakers are seeking to use chewing gum to plug the holes.\u00a0 <\/span>Using the gum in place of asphalt will help cut costs and provides a quick, easy solution to the pothole problem.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>For this to work, the gum must be pre-chewed.\u00a0 <\/span>It will take an estimated 100,000 square feet of the sticky substance to plug every hole.\u00a0 <\/span>Yhe city may have taken on a project too big for it to handle, however.\u00a0 <\/span>Each piece of gum must be chewed for exactly one minute.\u00a0 <\/span>The city is unable to hire enough mouths to chew the gum to be able to finish repairs this year.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Chief-Chewmaster Cassandra Kim oversees 12 chewers.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s a big project,\u201d Kim said.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe come in and get started chewing as soon as the day starts.\u00a0 <\/span>Shifts are eight hours, but with all the new product, we are working 12-hour days.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Not any old gum will work, however.\u00a0 <\/span>The gum that needs to fill the holes must be a specific kind.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Chewing gum expert Paul Shin has chosen which gum would be best for filling the potholes.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIn my expert opinion, I would say that Hubba-bubba is the one to use,\u201d Shin said.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cGum takes about four hours to harden, and when it does, it is perfectly safe to drive over.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The gum will provide a quick fix for the rest of the winter.\u00a0 <\/span>Once things begin to heat up again during the summer, the gum may soften.\u00a0 <\/span>Shin has stated that this will not be a problem.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThe gum will continue to stick to the potholes,\u201d Shin assures.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cBesides, it will be fun to see all the black tar brightened up with pink and blue.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The city is estimated to save one-third of its annual budget by switching to gum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
