{"id":5194,"date":"2018-03-09T09:50:19","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T14:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/?p=5194"},"modified":"2025-08-23T16:37:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T20:37:43","slug":"shriners-more-than-just-the-circus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/2018\/03\/09\/shriners-more-than-just-the-circus\/","title":{"rendered":"Shriners: More Than Just the Circus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2018\/03\/DSC_0191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5195\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2018\/03\/DSC_0191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4512\" height=\"3000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/DSC_0191.jpg 4512w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/DSC_0191-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/DSC_0191-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/DSC_0191-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2018\/03\/DSC_0191-1200x798.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4512px) 100vw, 4512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>If you have ever seen a parade you may have seen the Shriners.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They can be spotted driving around in their tiny cars.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some might have bought a ticket to their circus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Shriners are a nation-wide group that helps children and young adults in local communities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Its members run 22 hospitals across the United States.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The patients they care for are mostly children under the age of 18.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dick Hallett of Mars Hill served as Potentate at the Presque Isle lodge in 2006.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A Potentate is like a CEO.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cOur main purpose as a Shriner is to just help children,\u201d Hallett said.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Children at schools in places such as Mars Hill and Presque Isle are screened by their teachers for any bone defects.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Children who have defects, but can\u2019t pay for treatment, can have expenses covered by the Shriners.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Teachers will give a list of children who need treatment to the schools.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The schools then give it to the Shriners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Helping children takes a lot of money.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The circus has been the Shiners biggest fundraiser.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Carol Hallett, Dick\u2019s wife, has supported the circus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWomen practically run the circus,\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Wives of Shriners would run concession stands and ticket booths.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In recent years, elephants are no longer part of the act.
