\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>On Nov. 8, Wieden Gymnasium hosted the UMPI basketball season\u2019s opening ceremony, Midnight Madness.\u00a0 <\/span>During the opening ceremony, UMPI as a family helped one little boy\u2019s Christmas wish come true.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Jacob. R. Thompson was a 9-year-old Maine boy.\u00a0 <\/span>He was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma when he was 5 years old.\u00a0 <\/span>His favorite holiday was Christmas. Many people were moved by his story to upload videos of their friends and families singing holiday carols to the Barbara Bush Children\u2019s Hospital Facebook page.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe all think of them. We hope his family and he have a Merry Christmas.\u201d Dan Kane, athletic director\/ men\u2019s basketball head coach, offered these words to Jacob in the opening speech.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Then the UMPI family joined in to give Jacob best wishes and optimism for the future. UMPI members together sang \u201cJingle Bells\u201d for Jacob and his friends at the Barbara Bush Children\u2019s Hospital at the Maine Medical Center.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis is a great opportunity to wish the young boy–who can go through a very hard time–wish he has a very happy Christmas,\u201d Trevor Parent, women\u2019s soccer head coach, said.\u00a0 <\/span>He took part in singing \u201cJingle Bells\u201d and he also sent best wishes to Jacob.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Jacob and his family celebrated Christmas\u2014their last together–on Nov. 12, 2017.\u00a0 <\/span>As all friends wished, they had a pleasant Christmas.\u00a0 <\/span>Unfortunately, a week later, Jacob\u2019s optimism and smiling disappeared from the world. He died on Nov. 19, 2017.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Jacob spent nearly half of his life fighting cancer. But in his short life, he touched many with his smiles and optimism.\u00a0 <\/span>Despite the pain that his loss leaves in the hearts of many, they are thankful that his physical pain is over.\u00a0 <\/span>And they are thankful for the gifts that he left with them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
