{"id":4965,"date":"2017-10-11T09:50:05","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T13:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/?p=4965"},"modified":"2025-08-13T18:58:50","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T22:58:50","slug":"october-and-the-space-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/2017\/10\/11\/october-and-the-space-race\/","title":{"rendered":"October and the Space Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/04\/telescope-clipart-cliparti1_telescope-clip-art_01-1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4771\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/04\/telescope-clipart-cliparti1_telescope-clip-art_01-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Geopolitics played a big role in the push to space.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Attempts to be the first to get to space and even the moon were not done for altruistic reasons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They were done to prove one political philosophy was better than another.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Was democracy better or was communism?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Who would be the best?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The first lead in the space race occurred on Oct. 4, 1957, 60 years ago.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>On that date, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 (Russian for traveler) into space on top of an R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Sputnik 1 was a little larger than a basketball and had a transmitter that would ping every few seconds.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This ping could be picked up on Earth by any individual with a ham radio.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The scary thing wasn\u2019t the pinging basketball, but the fact that the Soviets had a rocket powerful enough to launch something into space.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If they could do that, they could hit anywhere in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>On Nov. 3, 1957, the soviets launched Sputnik 2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sputnik 2 went one step further: it sent the first animal into space\u2013a dog names Laika.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The U.S. had to respond.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We did, but it wasn\u2019t until Jan. 31, 1958, nearly four months later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The story of the space race is interesting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The U. S. was behind in the space race until the Apollo 8 Moon Mission in Dec. of 1968.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Today, the Russians, the United States and most of the rest of the world work collaboratively in space with the International Space Station.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Times have truly changed.<\/p>\n<p
