{"id":4818,"date":"2017-05-05T09:49:59","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T13:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/?p=4818"},"modified":"2025-08-13T18:59:31","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T22:59:31","slug":"summer-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.umpi.edu\/utimes\/2017\/05\/05\/summer-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0Hello everyone. \u00a0It is time to get ready for the summer. \u00a0After this winter, I am sure you are ready for warn summer nights. \u00a0I know I am. \u00a0Listed below are the events that will be happening in the skies above our heads this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Probably the best way to keep up to date on astronomical events would be to join the UMPI\/Aroostook County Astronomy Club\u2019s Facebook page. \u00a0This page will provide you with interesting astronomy articles and information on upcoming astronomical events and club activities.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you are in the area, please feel free to join us. \u00a0Here are the planned dates and times for our meetings during the summer. \u00a0The meeting locations will vary, but will be posted on the Facebook page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Saturday, June 3, 8 p.m., Topic\u2013A close look at Venus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Saturday, July 1, 8:30 p.m., Topic\u2013The Moon Landing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Saturday, July 29, 8 p.m., Topic\u2013Review of the August 21 Solar Eclipse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friday, August 11, 7:30 p.m., Topic\u2013Observing the Perseid Meteor Shower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For more information on the UMPI Astronomy Club or the Aroostook County Astronomy Club, join our Facebook page \u201cAroostook County Astronomy Club\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps the biggest event of this summer will be the solar eclipse that will occur on August 21. \u00a0Unfortunately, it will not be visible in Maine. \u00a0The path of the eclipse will have the shadow of the moon enter the United States in Oregon and exit it in South Carolina. \u00a0If you have the ability to travel, do it. \u00a0It will be worth the trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Many people are making plans now and picking spots to observe the eclipse. \u00a0The best advice would be to wait a little bit. \u00a0You will have difficulties finding a hotel room, but August usually brings thunderstorms throughout most of the U.S., so you can\u2019t really be sure where you will be able to see the eclipse. \u00a0For more information on the eclipse go to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse2017.nasa.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/eclipse2017.nasa.gov\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Throughout the summer the International Space Station (ISS) will be passing near many bright stars and planets. These occurrences are always interesting to watch because they usually help identify the ISS or the object. \u00a0This big listing below shows all of these passes. \u00a0Below are the close passes with the moon and planets. \u00a0Also worth noting is August 11 when the ISS may actually eclipse the bright star Antares in the constellation of Scorpius.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">05\/25 21:26 ISS passes 0.45 degrees from Jupiter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">06\/05 22:58 ISS passes 0.7 degrees from the Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">07\/11 02:38 ISS will cross the face of the Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">07\/24 20:43 ISS passes 0.6 degrees from Saturn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">08\/11 20:53 ISS may pass over or just miss Antares (Alpha Scorpius).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Every August the Perseid meteor shower occurs. \u00a0Typically, this is one of the best meteor showers of the year to watch. \u00a0Upwards of 50 meteors an hour may be seen at the shower\u2019s peak and the shower happens when it is warm and comfortable outside. \u00a0Grab a comfortable chair, look toward the northeast and look up into the sky. \u00a0Start watching the meteor shower on or around August 9 and continue watching until August 16.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The night sky over Aroostook
