The crisp air of late September signals one thing across northern Maine and its neighboring province of New Brunswick\u2026 Harvest. For farmers like Dwayne Oneill, who grows potatoes, grain, and raises cattle, the end of September and beginning of October is more than just another time of year, it is the most crucial time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s when all the work from spring and summer finally pays off.\u201d Oneill says. \u201cIt is how everybody gets fed. All the animals, and all the people. From apples, grain, potatoes and more. It’s so we can keep the rotation going.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHarvest went alright this year,\u201d Oneill adds. \u201cIt was very dry and hot, but we managed.\u201d Oneill explains, \u201cThe potatoes are carefully stored for winter and spring shipping, ensuring that there\u2019s enough supply to last until next season.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harvest is especially important to recognize, because UMPI is the educational home to many students from farming families and agricultural backgrounds. The agricultural department supports the next generation of growers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Noah Margeson, UMPI Agricultural Business and Agricultural Science alumni took part in the harvest season this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI grew up on a farm from a young age, then it evolved,\u201d Margeson says. \u201cI use what I learned at UMPI! Soil science is a prime example of something that has helped me in the day-to-day of farming life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked how the harvest went this year, Margeson admits, \u201cIt went well considering the lack of rain throughout the summer.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the hell week of farming.\u201d he adds with a grin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From early mornings to late nights, harvest is very demanding, but for farmers like Oneill and Margeson, it\u2019s also a reminder of why they do what they do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
