In this new series, Behind the Scenes with Campus Staff, we explore what goes on behind the quiet halls and empty classrooms while most of us are away from campus.

Joey Seeley is chief of police at the university. During the school year, Seeley strives to make everyone feel safe. While summer may be quieter, Seeley’s work doesn’t stop.

“Basically, in the summer I work on updating different policies and the clarity report, because it is time-consuming.” Seeley starts, “Also, during the summer I work on mandatory training as a police officer.”

“As a sworn police officer, I go to the firing range, self-defense training, and state-mandated training every year. A couple of them are firearm-related, and new law updates every year.”

Seeley explains that this keeps him fairly busy.

In addition, on campus, Seeley patrols the area seeking out homeless encampments.

“Due to the homelessness, we do patrol the grounds to prevent camping or fires,” he explained.

Camping out on campus or starting a fire goes against school policy. If Seeley finds someone on campus who shouldn’t be there, he turns to a new resource. Laurie Chandler, who is the new community outreach coordinator in Presque Isle.

“We recently had a fire not on campus but close to the tracks, and she responded to the scene immediately. It’s a great resource to the city and UMPI,” said Seeley

Despite the responsibilities, Seeley does find moments to recharge. He recently took a much-needed break with a cruise to Bermuda.

“As far as relaxing goes, I don’t let a lot of grass grow under my feet.
