About

Kevin McCartney is a Professor of Geology and Environmental Studies at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. During February to June 2022, he is a Fulbright Scholar in Lucknow India, where we continues his scientific work in micropaleontology. Kevin studies the silicoflagellates, single celled algae that live in the modern oceans and have a long geologic history. He posts daily pictures from India on this page.

Kevin was previously a Fulbright Scholar in Szczecin Poland during two semesters 2016-2017 and Kościuszko Scholar in Spring 2019. Pictures from these travels can be seen on this site using the links below.

A silicoflagellate!

8-6-silicoflagellates

Two silicoflagellates!  I got some time on a scanning electon microscope while in Warsawa.  The sample was not a clean as I would have liked, but here are two silicos, a large Corbisema constricta and a three-sided silicoflagellate in the middle.  We will likely see more of these later.
