I took a risk with teaching an instructional protocol that I have never taught before&#8211;it was inspiring, but complex <\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"8\" data-page-index=\"0\">in the number of steps that were required in the discussion rounds<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"10\" data-page-index=\"0\">. I am hoping that sharing this post will not only help model peer critique as a strategy in the classroom&#8211;but also that debriefing new experiences with students is priceless for us as instructors, and for student metacognition. All of the students were adults and consented to capture this activity for publication. For this activity, I broke students up into 2 groups of 4. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"16\" data-page-index=\"0\">The protocol I chose was the School Reform Initiative\u2019s (2021) Constructivist Tuning Protocol. I was<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"17\" data-page-index=\"0\"> interested in the opportunity to explicitly teach <strong>active listening<\/strong>, an emotional intelligence skill that these preservice teachers will need in the field&#8211;and one that will help the peer critiques of their future final project<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"18\" data-page-index=\"0\">.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"22\" data-page-index=\"0\">Students often get nervous about sharing work with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"23\" data-page-index=\"0\"> peers, so having a chance to do practice strategies together, while reinforcing the idea of what kind of feedback is <em>helpful <\/em><\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"24\" data-page-index=\"0\">was great timing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"PSPDFKit-Spread\" data-spread-index=\"0\">\n<section class=\"PSPDFKit-Page PSPDFKit-Page-Rotation-0-degree PSPDFKit-5n4p2xw22yc7wfzum66h4dvppd PSPDFKit-5xupdwena6uabmu9kpv3mqfdwz\" data-page-index=\"0\" data-page-is-loaded=\"true\">\n<div class=\"PSPDFKit-7gjegpzk7znma7erwdvdza5ypz\">\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 26px;\">The protocol: step and goals<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 26px;\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/s.brightspace.com\/a807cc75-beb5-4465-92a7-a960fcd79ee6\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"PSPDFKit-Spread\" data-spread-index=\"1\">\n<section class=\"PSPDFKit-Page PSPDFKit-Page-Rotation-0-degree PSPDFKit-5n4p2xw22yc7wfzum66h4dvppd PSPDFKit-5xupdwena6uabmu9kpv3mqfdwz\" data-page-index=\"1\" data-page-is-loaded=\"true\">\n<div class=\"PSPDFKit-7gjegpzk7znma7erwdvdza5ypz\">\n<div class=\"PSPDFKit-56n1nqnnrb1vp96tz5hfxdeh29\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"1\" data-page-index=\"1\">This peer critique protocol required me (as facilitator) to introduce not only the protocol, but also the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"2\" data-page-index=\"1\">\u00a0skill we were practicing (active listening), and the success criteria that students were that group<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"3\" data-page-index=\"1\"> participants were supplying feedback about. Although the original protocol outlined a longer<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"4\" data-page-index=\"1\"> whole-group presentation, I made some time adjustments so that as many students as possible<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"5\" data-page-index=\"1\"> would be able to experience both presenting and listening, giving and receiving feedback<\/span><\/span><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"6\" data-page-index=\"1\">. The protocol steps, as follows, were:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"PSPDFKit-56n1nqnnrb1vp96tz5hfxdeh29\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"7\" data-page-index=\"1\">The presenter will present their project to the class (4 minutes)<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"PSPDFKit-56n1nqnnrb1vp96tz5hfxdeh29\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"8\" data-page-index=\"1\">Others will actively listen, and take notes as needed<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"PSPDFKit-56n1nqnnrb1vp96tz5hfxdeh29\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-6sac9jfr3tkfj891p6bzuaurjz PSPDFKit-7ueugkc3n8r9d1x6ve8eyrzr1e PSPDFKit-7r92wqbyrypf78kb6d9dentg6f PSPDFKit-Text\" style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"PSPDFKit-8eut5gztkfn71zukw49x824t2\" data-textline-id=\"9\" data-page-index=\"1\">The participants will get to ask any clarifying questions (1 minute)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"PSPDFKit-56n1nqnnrb1vp96tz5hfxdeh29\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
