Not sure what an ounce of cheese looks like? How much is a serving of meat? Or what two teaspoons of sauce looks like? Students from Dr. Bonnie Wood’s Bio 300 Human Nutrition class have put together an exhibit to help you answer these and other nutrition questions. Keeping in mind that part of maintaining good health is knowing appropriate portion sizes, Chelsea Boudreau, Leah Finnemore, Kayla Fleming, and Paul Rucci have created an exhibit to demonstrate just that. For example:

A 3 ounce portion of meat, fish or poultry is equivalent to the palm of your hand, or a deck of cards

A 1″ cube is equivalent to an ounce of cheese

One handful equals one ounce of nuts or raisins

A book of matches is equivalent to two ounces of sauce.

In addition to portion size guidelines, Chelsea, Leah, Kayla and Paul have compiled some stress-busting tips for the end of the semester (Did someone say “FINALS?”). You can lessen your stress by exercising, getting enough sleep, listening to music, and eating healthy foods. Start with these suggestions:

More green tea, less coffee

More sparkling juice, less soda

More healthy munchies (fruits, nuts, cheese and crackers), less sugar.

Stop by the Library to see these great suggestions and more information about good nutrition choices.

Feel like spring is in the air? Don’t worry, there is still time to get out and enjoy the snow. Our campus Outdoor Adventure Program International (OAPI) has great winter activities planned, and you don’t have to be a pro to go. Planned activities include: cross-country skiing at Aroostook State Park, free rides to Big Rock Ski Mountain, spring break trip to Mont Sainte Anne, and a hiking/snowshoeing ascent of Mount Katahdin. For more information, contact OAPI Manager, Amanda Morin (768-9401), check out the OAPI schedule posted in the library, or visit the OAPI web site http://www.umpi.edu/gentile-hall/oapi/upcoming-events .

And if you want to do more planning before you venture out, the UMPI library has resources to help you learn about nature in winter, and winter recreation and safety. Remember also, your UMPI card allows you access to most resources on other UM campuses, the Maine State Library, and the Bangor Public Library. If you don’t know how to request a book from the URSUS catalog, ask one of the staff for help. Now go find some skis or snowshoes – don’t miss your chance to enjoy the snow!

“…Native Americans have distinguished themselves as inventors, entrepreneurs, spiritual leaders, and scholars. Our debt to our First Americans is immense, as is our responsibility to ensure their fair, equal treatment and honor the commitments we made to their forebears.” President Barack Obama, Oct. 30, 2009 http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/presidential-proclamation-national-native-american-heritage-month, accessed Nov. 11, 2009

On October 2009, President Barack Obama proclaimed November 2009 as National Native American Heritage Month, calling on all Americans to commemorate the month with programs and activities celebrating Native American achievements and contributions. In addition, President Obama designated November 27, 2009 as Native American Heritage Day. Since 1994, each American president has issued a proclamation designating November as a month dedicated to the First Americans.

Our November library exhibit celebrates Native American Heritage Month by drawing attention to resources available at the University of Maine Presque Isle Library. Example resources describe the rich cultural and historical heritage of Native Americans, especially those of our region, and the honor accorded to ancestors, demonstrated by contemporary expression and communication. From creating music and basketry, to writing autobiographies, to using native language in new ways, Native Americans continue to honor “those who came before” by building on and expanding on their heritage.

Many organizations collaborated to offer special exhibits and programs during November. A number of these exhibits and programs are available online:

About Native American Heritage Month http://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/about/index.html

With the start of the semester just around the corner, we wanted to remind everyone of the return for another semester of IT training sessions to answer your questions on the use of technology at UMPI. This is a great way to ask questions, try out software you have been wondering about, or generally become more familiar with what is available to you. We especially encourage new students to stop in for one of the sessions. The sessions are drop in and are scheduled Monday through Friday from 2-3pm in the Library Conference Room during the fall semester.
