ENG 186: INTRO TO MEDIA WRITING
FULFILLS GEC WRITING INTENSIVE REQUIREMENT. Students get a solid foundation for all types of media writing, including public information, advertising, marketing and journalism. Then they’ll get out of the classroom and into the community to apply what they’ve learned. The course paves the way for further work in mass communication. It also gives a solid basis for any kind of professional writing. Students will work with nonprofit community partners, producing information products that will help the organizations reach out with their messages more effectively. Producing these published pieces will help our students stand out from the pack for life after UMPI. This class is the foundation for the Journalism/Mass Communication/Professional Writing program. It will meet TuTh, 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
ENG 386: NEWSPAPER PRACTICUM
FULFILLS GEC WRITING INTENSIVE REQUIREMENT& TECHNOLOGY INTENSIVE REQUIREMENT. Students in this course will create an online and print vehicle that covers the campus and the greater community. This hands-on class has something for every interest: writing, photography, art, design, marketing, advertising, online development. We’re looking, not just for writers but also for people with business, artistic, graphic and other skills. If students have an area of expertise they want to develop, we’ll tap it. During the spring, students will be part of expanding the U Times to a heavy online presence and extending our coverage into the community. We’ll be developing the business aspects of the U Times, as well as its news reach. What students’ produce will make them stand out for life after UMPI. We invite them to help be part of something that’s limited only by their imagination. We’ll meet twice a week as a class to plan, get assignments, share thoughts and content. “Homework” will be running the newspaper business, with lots of room for guided but independent work and entrepreneurship. The class will meet TuTh, 2-3:15 p.m. Again, please contact me with any questions.
